Best Practices in Insulin Initiation for Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: The PA-Physician Partnership

Monday, May 29, 2006

Physician assistants are assuming a greater role in patient care in the US health system. An examination of attitudes and beliefs about diabetes among physician assistant trainees was performed and demonstrated that physician assistant students had favorable attitudes regarding type 2 diabetes. However, opportunities exist in understanding when to advance therapy.

Routine assessment of glycemic control is critical to implement and modify therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes. Good glycemic control has been shown to ameliorate the development of diabetes complications and to reduce mortality. The use of basal and premixed insulin analogs, in combination with oral agents, can contribute to improving glucose control.

The physician assistant-physician partnership plays an important role in the care of patients with type 2 diabetes. This case-based symposium will highlight multidisciplinary approaches to initiating and adjusting insulin analog therapy in different patient scenarios.

The focus will be on practical strategies and real-life solutions to introducing and advancing insulin therapy in a range of patient types.
